Florence
is a great place to live and raise a family. We have great
natural beauty, plenty of clean air and green spaces, and
a big river to enjoy. We all want to keep things that way for
future generations. And just as we want a clean city, we want
a
clean
government. We can have both. We deserve both.

Why
I Am Running
I
am running for Mayor because Florence needs a change in leadership,
and I have the right vision for our
city and the people. It’s that simple. You
know I will listen to you, and I’ve worked hard to make
sure your voices are heard at City Hall. As I listen, I keep hearing
the same thing all over Florence: people are disappointed. The
citizens of Florence
wanted a new attitude on the part of elected officials, one friendly
and honest to them. Unfortunately, City Hall is still run
the same old way, with an agenda that’s not always in the people’s
interest.

Economic
Development
Our
existing businesses, big and small, are the economic
foundation and backbone of this community - and I will
never forget
that as I work to bring in new businesses. I have
a vision for Florence as a progressive, growing, and
thriving city.
We can have a bigger job base if we attract new kinds
of jobs and support the jobs we already have. I will
use my
contacts around the state and nation, work with other
local leaders, and together with you, we can all make
it happen.

Education
In
successful cities, the city government – particularly
the mayor – takes an active role in education,
working closely with the public school system. Florence
has never had that kind of relationship. Just go to
the Florence government website and look for a link
to the city school system; you won’t find it.
That’s emblematic of the problem.

Contract
Ethics
Florence has seen far too many sweetheart deals over the
years. My administration
will have an absolute commitment
to contract ethics. The days of who-you-know contracting will end.
Major contracts should be submitted to an open bid process. This
is not
just about finding a low bid to save money. A bidding
process
is how you make sure the contractor can do the job right.

Veterans
Park
The thing to do with Veterans park is
save it, not destroy it. Remember Bass Pro? Why were the minds behind
Bass Pro so secretive, so unwilling to listen or explain themselves?
What I learned from that episode is that Florence citizens care deeply
about Veterans Park, and public officials should breed confidence
in our citizens instead of eroding it. Whatever we do with the park,
I am committed to an open process.
